Generative Mashrabiya

Personal Exploration

A mashrabiya or mashrabiyya (Arabic: مشربية) is an architectural element which is characteristic of traditional architecture in the Islamic world. It is traditionally used to allow for the passage of light while preserving the privacy of the interiors as well as passively cooling the interiors.

Using grasshopper, we can apply a desired pattern and populate the tiles in a way which maintains an appearance of randomness while also controlling the density of shaded areas in desired parts of the screen.

After the pattern is generated, the surfaces are joined to create a pattern ready to be lasercut on a sheet of metal. Several of the surfaces are stacked to create an immersive light diffusion effect.
